SNELTON, Dlroctor
Richard D. Lamm
Governor
DATE: May 15, 1984
T0: Brian Munson
FROM: Dan Mathews ~~~
RE: 1984 Vegetation Inspection - "A" Team
At a vegetation task force meeting in February, 1984, it was decided that
quantitative vegetation sampling should be undertaken at a number of mines
this summer. Of the mines with which I most famil' here are only two
which should probably be considered - olow a Grassy Ga A number of
other "A" team mines in North Park, t e orthwest (HG, rapper, Sun), and the
Southeast may also be prime candidates.
Our rationale is that standardized sampling at a number of mines in each
region (i.e. same observer, same techniques) should allow valid comparisons of
the effect of various environmental factors (soil depth and quality,
precipitation, slope and aspect) and cultural practices (seed mix, season,
rate, mulch, cover crop, fertilizer, contour furrow act.).
~ Due to the time and expense involved in the collection and analysis of
\ production data, sampling will be limited to total cover and woody density.
`1~,~~,; Soil samples/depths and slope measurements will also be taken. In addition,
~(? sample specimens will be collected to develop an MLR herbarium.
D
Specific sampling plans for Colowyo~and Grassy Gap are listed below. I
believe Mike Savage has developed sampling plans for a number of other mines
in the regions I mentioned previously.
Equipment and Supplies
- 50m tape
- Field Data Forms
- Meter Stick
- Soil Auger and Sample Bottles
- Adhesive Tape - Felt Marker
- Point Frame
- Brunton Compass
- Hand Lens
- Plant Keys
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203 Tel.
