Iron was measured
as total recoverable until April 1994 when the Colorado Department of Public Health and
Environment changed the discharge permit to require iron to be measured as potentially
dissolved.
SPECIAL ANALYSIS
During the September monitoring event for upstream and downstream North Thompson
Creek, additional samples were obtained from Outfall 001 and the discharge points from
the No. 1 and No. 3 Mines (mine effluent). The discharge points from the No. 1 and No.
3 mines are the 6-inch pipe and the 4-inch pipe respectively that discharge upstream of the
long pond. Another analysis of the mine effluent was obtained during October. The main
purpose of these special analyses was to determine if the mine effluent actually requires
treatment with respect to iron. The following tables show the combined untreated effluent
from the No. 1 and No. 3 mines will meet CDPS iron limits without treatment. The
combined iron content is weighted based on measured flow. Over 80% of the flow is from
the No. 1 Mine.
Combined Dischar es to Meet CDPS Limits
Se tember 8, 2002
Untreated Untreated Combined CDPS
No. 1 Mine No. 3 Mine 82% - 18% Limits
Iron m I - Pd 0.08 1.29 0.300 0.431
Iron m I 0.10 1.37 0.329 0.957
