• Weed control operations were conducted during the spring of 1990 in fourteen separate
areas as listed in Table 5 and shown on Exhibit 90.2. Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense)
was the target species in all control areas. The herbicide used consisted of a tank mix
of 2.5 gallons of 22k Tordon and 2.5 gallons of 2, 4-D amine with 250 gallons of water. A
spot spray gun was used to concentrate control activities on target areas, reducing
potential impacts [o adjacent desirable vegetation. The herbicide mix, based on
recommendations from the Colorado State Extension Service, was mixed end applied under [he
supervision of a certified applicator. The weed control areas will be monitored in 1991
for effectiveness and potential retreatment.
Revegetation monitoring was conducted on permanently revegeteted areas during the summer
of 1990. Monitoring areas included two, four, and seven year old reclamation, the grazed
Wedge Pasture area, revegeteted areas reclaimed the same year es the Wedge pasture to
provide a control comparison to the grazed pasture and native reference areas. The annual
vegetation monitoring report is now in the final draft preparation stages and will be
submitted prior to April 15.
• Grazing
Livestock grazing was conducted at the Seneca II Mine from July through November 1990 in
the Wedge Pasture (Permit C-80-005, Appendix 13-4, Nap 1). Long yearlings totaling 160 in
number were grazed from July 23 through September 18. This resulted in 58 days of grazing
use. Assuming each long yearling requires 648 pounds of forage per month, a total of
200,413 pounds of forage were consumed (648 pounds of forage x 1.933 months x 160
yearlings). The 1990 forage production in the 302 acre pasture totaled 827,782 pounds
(302 acres x 2741 pounds per acre). The 1990 estimated forage utilization 6y livestock in
the Wedge pasture was 24.2 percent (20D,413 pounds of forage consumed + 827,782 pounds
available forage).
Approximately 950 sheep were grazed et the Seneca Il Mine, excluding the Wedge pasture,
from October 2 through November 25, 1990. Assuming that one sheep requires 162 pounds of
forage per month, a total of 153,900 pounds of forage were consumed. An estimate of
forage utilization for the sheep grazing cannot be made because a portion of the grazing
period was spent on native lends adjacent to the Seneca II Mine reclaimed areas.
• Chronological His[orv of Revegetation
Previously revegeteted areas et the Seneca II Mine are listed by field number in Table b
and shown on Exhibit 90.3, Chronological Nistory of Revegetation Activities.
