It is also widely used for turf grass <br />weed control in residential and nonresidential applications. 2,4-D was first introduced in 1947. <br />There are many forms of 2,4-D, including esters, amines, and salts. Environmental <br />toxicological, fate, and transport data for 2,4-D is presented in Table 2 of this SAP. <br />Based on extensive study, 2,4-D is considered a Toxicity Category III, slightly toxic, compound <br />with respect to dermal, oral, and inhalation exposure. 2,4-D is classified as a Toxicity Category <br />I chemical for eye exposure. Studies indicate 2,4-D is non-mutagenic and is unlikely to be <br />teratogenic. Evidence indicates 2,4-D is quickly expelled by mammals, including humans; and <br />does not accumulate in mammals or other organisms. Extensive research conducted in the <br />U.S., New Zealand, and Australia, as wells as studies of Vietnam veterans in the U.S. all <br />indicate 2,4-D is non-carcinogenic. In July 1998, USEPA issued its report on the tier one <br />screening of 168 chemicals suspected of being potential endocrine disrupters. These test <br />results placed 2,4-D in the category of chemicals known to have no endocrine effects. <br />Ecological effects of 2,4-D are variable. The chemical is slightly to moderately toxic to birds. <br />Some formulations are highly toxic to fish, whereas others are less so. Extensive research and <br />numerous published studies indicate 2,4-D is readily biodegradable and is practically incapable <br />of surviving in the open environment for more than a few days.
