• •
Larimer County Planning Department
200 West Oak
' Ft. Collins, CO 80521
July 11, 1988
Dear Gentlemen,
' This letter is regarding the third filing for the Sterling
Companies Special Review which will, once again, come before your
' committee on July 27, 1988. This permit will be to mine and crush
gravel on 58 acres of land (which Sterling Companies does not
currently own) just north of their "Seaworth Pit" on iiorth Taft
Hill Road.
' We are aware of this Planning Commission date via phoney calls to
Mr. Gerald White and through our lawyer. It should be pointed out
that we have not received the customary letters notifying us of
any impending hearings.
As you are aware, this is the third such filing by Sterling
Companies. It is grossly apparent that Sterling's is trying to
financially drain the families opposing their proposed mining
operation. We have spent well over $8,000 trying to keen a gravel
' pit from destroying our incomes, our property values and our
health. This is no exaggeration when our home sits 98 feet from
the property line of the proposed site.
' The problems associated with this mining operation Yiave been
reviewed numerous times. However, they are so serio us ~=hat they
continue to bear repeating. The loss of ground water from
Sterling's 19 85 pit has caused our hay production to drop by 60$.
Consequently we have had to purchase hay to provide feed for the
boarders at our small livery business. This has reduced our
' income and, needless to stay, any further depletion of ground
water would be devastating to our business, our pasture.. and our
hay fields.
' Our property value will undoubtably be effected by the location
of a gravel "pit" (that certainly describes it well) 98 feet from
our house. Not only will its value decline, but its
' marketability as well. People do not wish to buy property across
the street from an eyesore, and a noisy one at that.
Attached please find a letter from Dr. Daniel Jinich regarding
the impact such a facility will have on the health of our
asthmatic child.
' There is much at stake here. land, homes, families,
livelihoods, and quality of life. We have spent over seven months
and thousands of dollars fighting to save those things.
