• collected in native mountain brush stands at [he Seneca II Mlne. P1 an[Sngs were completed
in late September 1997 in reclaimed sites which were disced several times during the
growing season to control established herbaceous vegetation and prepare the site for
planting. The heavy disci ng created numerous planting microsites.
Weed Control
Survey for noxious weeds was carried out on the Seneca II Mine permit area in 1997.
Because the 1997 weed control actrvities includ etl some small scattered spot control areas,
sites which were sprayed were too small to depict on a map. Monitoring was conducted in
1997 to determine [he need or level of retreatment necessary for areas sprayed in 1996.
Canada thistle ICirsium arvensel was the primary target species in all control areas, with
lesser activity directed Cowards areas of whitetop (Ca rdaria draba~. The applied herbicide
consisted of a tank mix of 2.5 gallons of 22K Tordon and 2.5 gallons of 2,4,-D with 250
gallons of water. Control areas were sprayed In June. A spot spray gun was used Co
concentrate control activities on target areas, reducing potential impacts to adjacent
desirable vegetation. The herbicide mix, based on recommendations from the Colorado State
Extension Service, was mixed and applied under [he supervision of [he Seneca Mine
Reclamation Supervisor who is a certified applicator. The weed control areas will continue
to be monitored in 1998 for effectiveness and necessary reireatment.
Revegetation Monitoring
Reveg e[atlon monitoring of permanently rev eq e[a[ed areas was rood uct etl during the summer of
1997 by ESCO Associates, Inc. The 1997 annual rev eg etation monitoring report is submitted
as a separate document (E$CO and PWCG, 1998(.
Grazing
Lo nq yearlings were run in the Wadge Pasture during 1997, On June 25, 180 head were placed
in the Wadge Pasture. On June 26, 100 head were placed in the Pecoco pasture. On September
28, all cattle were moved off the Wadge and Pecoco pastures.
This grazing scheme resulCed in 461 am mal unit months (AUMSI of grazing in the Wadge
Pasture, and 256 AUM of grazing in the Pecoco Pasture. Based on 1396 Wadge Pasture
sampling daCa, [he annual production was 3385 pounds per acre on 300 acres, resulting in
1250 AUMs available. The resulting utilization Sn the Wadge Pasture was 37 percent. The
• resulting utilization for the Pecoco Pasture (assuming 1765 lb/acre production, 210 acres)
was 56 percent. In order to manipulate tha alfalfa component of these pastures, Seneca
began grazing 30 days sooner than in the past. Since grazing began in June, no production
4
