• Beetle (1970), Nickerson et al. (1976), or SCS (1979). Cross reference to the substantially
Reference Area Sampling
The Mountain Brush and Sagebrush reference areas were sampled to provide data for
comparison with reclaimed area data. Methods used were the same as detailed above for the
reclaimed areas except shrub density was determined within 1 x 50 m quadrats.
revised scientific nomenclature for the flora of Western Colorado, as set forth by Weber
(1987), may be determined by reference to Weber and Wittman (1992). Of plant species
observed, only Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense) is listed state-wide as a noxious weed
(Thornton et al., 1974, Routt Co. Extension Agent, personal communication, 1993). Buckhorn
plantain (Plantaoo lanceolata) and pennycress (Thlasoi arvense) are both restricted noxious
weeds in Colorado (Thornton et al., 1974); the former is sparingly present at some locations
in the reclaimed areas, while the latter is a common species in the youngest reclaimed areas,
and disappears within a few years.
Photoclraphic Record
Within each reclamation and reference area, representative color photographs were taken to
• document the appearance of the vegetation in 1992. Within each photo, a placard identifies the
particular reclamation area being illustrated. Photo locations are shown on the sample location
map (Map 1).
Statistical Methods
Sample adequacy calculations were carried out using the formula as prescribed by CMLRB
(1988):
l2 s2
Nmin =
d2 x2
where:
t = 1.645 (two-tailed t-value with infinite degrees of freedom)
s2 = sample variance (based sn_1)
d = 0.1 (level of precision or desired detectable reduction)
• s
