Exhibit 9 - 1999 Annual Report shows the revised configuration for this area. This area is
scheduled to received additional spoil, regrading, topsoil replacement and seeding in 2000.
Seeding
The seed mixture, as approved in the Permit, was applied in October and November. For
details as to the location of the seeded reclaimed areas, refer to Exhibit 9 - 1999 Annual
Report Map.
Shrub Plantings
The following bare root plant materials were planted in the strip seeded shrub establishment
area located in the Section 16 pit area in a 1998 reclaimed parcel. All reclaimed areas, sediment ponds, etc. were
checked for the invasion of noxious weeds and spot sprayed as necessary. Two noxious
weed species were noted: 1) Canadian thistle (Circium arvense) and Whitetop (Cardaria
spp.) but in very limited areas. The whitetop was encountered for the very first time in older
reclaimed areas near Streeter fill. It is suspected that the whitetop was brought in by wild
ungulates (elk). Tordon herbicide was applied on Canadian thistle in the fall and Escort
herbicide was applied on the whitetop in June in accordance with their respective labels.
One small area of reclamation (14.6 acres) was burned by a suspected lightening strike in
the East Pit. The area is delineated on Exhibit 9 - 1999 Annual Report. The fire was hot
enough to burn all of the herbaceous vegetation as well as a number of woody species. It
will be interesting to note whether the woody species are able to regenerate themselves or if
they were killed by the wildfire.
•,
