1987, 1988, 1990, 1991, and 1998, but exhibited recharge in all other yeazs since 1983. <br />Well 27, lowest of the three, shows that its water levels are moat likely dependent upon <br />the water level in the Wadqe Impoundment located 50 Eee[ away. The USGS personnel <br />operating the recorders prior to 1984 also support these findings. Well 26, located <br />between Wells 25 and 27, normally exhibits water levels higher than either 25 or 27. This <br />is not a normal ground water level gradient; therefore, ire water levels should be <br />reviewed with caution. Perhaps, as with Well 22, water is being trapped in the borehole. <br />Seven spoil wells were completed in the fall of 1987. Three (Well 59, 60, and 61) were <br />completed upgradient of the Spoils Spring 3 area, while four (Wells 62 to 65) were <br />completed in the Spoils Spring 1 area. The purpose of placing several wells at each site <br />was to accurately define the potentiometric surface of the spoils aquifer at each <br />location. Hater levels at all of these spoil wells exhibit normal seasonal vaziationa. <br />Well 65 has been dry for the entire period of record. It is located in an area where the <br />spoils are unsaturated. <br />Ground water Level Summary. All alluvial walla are showing distinct seasonal water level <br />fluctuations in response to periods of precipitation recharge or the lack of <br />• ~ precipitation. Overburden and coal well water levels are Fluctuating in response to the <br />precipitation recharge, induced ground water flow to the mine pits, and in some cases, <br />changes in reservoir water levels. Spoil sell water levels still indicate that only the <br />furthest downslope highwall portions of the spoil exhibit significant amounts of <br />saturation. Levels in a spoil well near the Wedge Impoundment are largely controlled by <br />water level fluctuations in the impoundment. Dewatezing by the wolf Creek coal mine pit <br />has resulted in lower than normal water levels in one of the wells monitoring that seam. <br />Water Quality. Ground water samples were collected from 19 wells on a biannual basis. In <br />addition, two wells (SOV42 and SSP25) that are required to be sampled did not have enough <br />water to sample. The parameter list used fox all wells sampled this year is given on <br />Table 4. Analyses have been performed by ACZ Laboratory in Steamboat Springs, Colorado <br />since May 31, 1983. ACZ Laboratory performs all analyses by EPA or equivalent methods. <br />Samples are delivered the day of collection to the lab in an iced cooler.
