Wedge Coal. Five wells monitor this seam. Wells 16 and 17 are in hydraulic communication <br />with the Wedge Impoundment (NPDES 002 Pond) because their water le vels change in response • <br />to a change in the pond's water level. Well 19 is a flowing well fitted with a pressure <br />gage that exhibits its highest pressure values in the fall. Well SW41 exhibits the same <br />typical seasonal variation as noted fox the alluvium. Well SW42 exhibits an increasing <br />water level trend at its adjacent backfilled mine pit continues to rasa tore te. <br />Wolf Creek Overburden/Wedge Underburden. Four wells monitor the Wadga Underburden in the <br />Wedge Coal mining area. Well 6 exhibits typical seasonal variation (as defined in the <br />preceding Alluvium discussion) and continues to exhibit an increasing water level trend. <br />Well BP1 continues with a long-term decreasing water level trend. A casing obstruction in <br />Well 8 (adjacent observation well to Well BP1), which first occurred in September 1996, <br />prevents measurements of water levels. Well 11 continues with a long-term increasing <br />water level trend. One well monitors the Wolf Creek Overburden in the Wolf Creek Coal <br />mining area. Well 7 exhibits typical seasonal variability. <br />Wolf Creek Coal. ~ One of the two wells (Well 10) that monitor the Wolf Creek Coal seam <br />exhibited the acme typical seasonal variability as previously defined. Well 15 has <br />exhibited i n the pant four years the lowest water levels on record. This is due to <br />dewatering from the adjacent mining pit. This well was abandoned in March 1998 in <br />preparation for the highwall reduction that rae to occur later in the year For final <br />reclamation in the area. <br />Spoils. Three wells;'~22, 23, and 24; era completed in the upper region of epoila above <br />the Wedge Impoundment, which is generally unsaturated. The 3.8 feet of saturation <br />observed rn Well 22 is most likely incorrect since adjacent wells 23 and 24 are normally <br />dry. The suspect water levels in Well 22 may be a result of watez trapped in the borehole <br />(perhaps by a boulder in the epoi la that the borehole does not completely penetrate). <br />However, this well became dry in August 1998. Well 23 eometimea shows water in late <br />February, March, and April as snow mel to quickly off this westerly-facing elope, al though <br />it has been dry since 1985. Well 24 has been dry For the entire period of record. <br />Three wells; 25, 26, and 27; are situated in the lower region of spoils above the Wadqe <br />Impoundment. All three of these wells were outfitted with continuous recorders operated <br />by the V.S. Geologrcal Survey (USGS) until the end of 1983. well 25, the highest <br />upgradient of these three wells on the spoils slope, indicated an abaenca of rechazge in <br />4 <br />
