• DISPOSAL ACTIVITIES
During 1997, a total of 62,148 tons of mixed fly and bottom ash were
transported to acid disposed of at the Keenesburg Mine site. This entire
quantity of ash was placed in "A" Pit, which by the end of 1997 contained a
total 235,135 tons of ash. This amount is in addition to the 114,342 tons of
ash which have been placed in "B" Pit (5,667 in North "B" Pit and 108,675
in South "B" Pit) during previous years. The total ash volume disposed of at
the Keenesburg site t}u-ough the end of 1997 is 349,477 tons.
The only ash accepted for disposal at the Keenesburg facility is that which
was generated by coal consumption at the Power Pla~~t located on Coors
Brewing Company property in Golden, Colorado. Since September, 1995
this Plant has been owned and operated by Trigen-Colorado Energy
Corporation. Under an agreement with Trigen, CEC will continue to dispose
of the ash at the Keenesburg site.
The source of coal supplied to fitel the Trigen owned Power Plant for much of
1997 continued to be the Bowie #1 Mine, located near Paonia, Colorado.
• Toward the later portion of 1997 coal quality at the Bowie #1 Mine
deteriorated to levels which prompted a temporary switch in coal supply
location, to the Cyprus-,Amax Twentymile Mine (near Steamboat, Colorado).
Meanwhile, Bowie Resources, Ltd. (owner of the Bowie #1 Mine) was
granted approval to begin operations of the Bowie #2 Mine. Although not in
a position to supply coal, other than a small quantity for stoker testing, the
development of the new mine is proceeding with the anticipation of "full
production by mid-1998. CEC submitted Minor Revision No. 32, seeking
authority to bum the coal and collect test data for the ash from Bowie #2
Mine, and to use the coal from Twentymile Mine on an interim basis (test
data was previously obtained for the asli from this coal).
Ash "grab" samples were taken at the Coors (now Trigen) Power Plant, both
in conjunction with MR-32 and at the end of 1997. hi each case samples of
both fly ash and bottom ash were collected and submitted for testing. The
samples were analyzed using the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure
(TCLP), and for radioactivity. Copies of these analyses have been included
in this report. ,
• The monthly ash disposal reports, summarizing the disposal activity at the
Keenesburg Site, are also found in this Section.
AIiR-1997 -84- Stipulation #24-25
