The method for sampling cover is
acceptable. MLRD personnel also measured vegetation cover in 1984 at the
Bourg (WCC) site. As you can see below, Dr. Keammerer's values for total
ground cover and bare soil are within 4 or 5 percent of MLRD values.
TABLE 1.
Revegetated area cover values from 1989 sampling at
Walden Coal Company's Bourg (dine
total Lltter total tsare
Sampled Plant Cover and Rock Ground Cover Soil
Seeded in 1964 23.7
Y,eammerer Report
Seeded in 1984 29.6
MLRD Sampling
46.7 70.3 29.7
39.3 68.9 31.1
(Litter only)
Total plant cover value differences can be attributed to times of samplinq_.
MLRD sampling occurred on August 30, 1989. The staff assumes that
Dr. Keammerer sampled the vegetation in June or July since the report is dated
July, 1989, and does not specify sample dates. If this is true, then
Dr. Keammerer could have sampled the vegetation prior to growth season
maturity and one would expect the F4LRD total plant cover value to be slightly
greater than Dr. Keammerer's value (Table 1).
