Henderson Mine SPCC/MCP May 1999
• 6.21 Concrete and Its Components-at Henderson Mine
Concrete is mixed in the Batch Plant at No. 2 Shaft and is then piped underground where
it is used in shotcrete for construction of draw points and other mine structures. Dry fly
ash and cement aze stored at the Batch Plant and aze used as additive components of the
concrete mixture. Liquid plasticizer (Polyheed 997) is stored at the No. 2 Shafr subcollaz
in two 500 gallon tanks which aze located within a concrete containment swnp. The
plasticizer (Polyheed 997) is added to the shotcrete during mixing to improve its adhesion
chazacteristics. Concrete accelerant (Meyco TCC-766) is stored in three 10(10 gallon
tanks in the Aggregate Storage Building at the Batch Plant. Meyco TCC-766 is mixed
with the concrete to speed up the curing process. Because of the caustic nature: of these
substances, spillage should be controlled and isolated from both the surface and
underground water systems to the extent practicable.
6.22 Flocculents-Henderson Mine and Urad Minesite
Non-hazazdous flocculents (sometimes referred to as polymers) aze added dieing the
water treatment process to enhance settling of particles. There are two five-hundred
gallon flocculent tanks in the Henderson Mine No. 1 Pond Flume House. Spillage from
these tanks would be contained within the No. 1 Pond. The flocculent tank in the Urad
Water Treatment Plant is located in the main portion of the plant. Any spillage from this
• tank would report to the building's main sump. There is also a flocculent system in
Urad's Old Mill Building that can be used during direct water treatment in the Urad
Treatment Ponds. Spillage from this tank would report to a floor drain that is piped to the
Lower Pump Pond.
6.23 Quicklime (Calcium Oxide~Urad Water Treatment Plant
Quicklime or calcium oxide is stored at the Urad Water Treatment Plant in two one-ton
silos. Silos aze filled pneumatically from 25 ton tanker trucks by blowing the quicklime
through the baghouses at the top of each silo. Dry quicklime is fed from the silos to
slakers inside the Urad treatment plant where water is added to the lime to fotm a slurry.
This lime slurry is used to raise the pH of the water during the initial phase of water
treatment. In the event of a spill of dry quicklime, the lime can be cleaned up using
shovels and disposed of in the sludge. A spill of slaked lime within the building should
be routed to the sump system using water sprays and brooms.
6.24 Drewfax 259 (Sodium Acrylate Polymer}-at Henderson Mine
Drewfax 259 is used for processing mud in the underground portion of Henderson Mine.
Approximately five 300 gallon totes aze stored at the No. 1 Shaft Hoist House for use
underground. Storage of the Drewfax 259 totes occurs within a concrete containment
. structure having a capacity of almost 5,000 gallons. A spill from one of the totes can be
isolated within the containment azea, mixed with floor dry or sand, scooped up with a
shovel and broom, and stored in a drum for proper disposal.
20
