West Elk Coal Company, Inc.
Post Office Boz 591
Somerset, Colorado 81434
Telephone 303 929 5015
September 27, 1985
Susan Mowry
CMLRD
1313 Sherman Street
Denver, Colorado 80202
Dear Susan:
iii iiiiiiiiniuiii
999
Enclosed is a plan to repair the landslide below the
main mine access road that occurred in the spring of
1985. The plan includes measures to relocate the 8
inch raw waterline and 2 inch potable water line
which were damaged or destroyed by the landslide as
well as plans to strengthen the existing wall above
the road and add backfill to buttress the 42 inch
silo conveyor bents.
West Elk requests a minor revision to perform the
work as outlined in the plan. The area is within the
disturbed surface boundary of the Mt. Gunnison mine
permit. The work will be done in an area where road
cut and fill was done during the original mine site
construction. Slopes were reclaimed utilizing the
existing subsoil. No topsoiling of the slopes was
done therefore, it will not be necessary to strip
topsoil. Upon completion of construction, the area
will be reseeded in accordance with the current
mining and reclamation plan.
Background Information - The past three spring runoff
seasons have been extremely wet and have cause many
small landslides and surficial slumps both in
disturbed and natural slopes at the Mt. Gunnison mine
site and surrounding area. During the spring of
1985, runoff due to snow melt caused movement of the
slope above the existing retaining wall. This
movement affected the alignment of 2 of the 42 inch
silo conveyor bents. The 2 bents were disconnected
from the belt structure to prevent belt misalignment.
OCT ~ ~ ti98'~
MINED LAND
gECLAMATION DIVISION
awco-czo~
