' January 7997 Kerr Coal Company " 1996 Annual Hydrology Report "CO Permit No. C~80~006 ~ 1
2.0 MONITORING AND ANALYSES
Water monitoring activities during the 1996 water yeaz (Ott. 1995 through Sept. 1996) were
' conducted according to the schedule contained in the Kerr Water Monitoring Plan submitted
during the 1991 midterm review and permit renewal. During a State of Colorado Division of
Mining and Geology inspection visit in early April, it was discovered that the operator was
' collecting water samples from the first bail at the top of the well. The Division recommended that
three casing volumes be evacuated from wells before collecting a sample and field data. In response
to this recommendation, Kerr Coal Company retained an independent sampler (Miller Water
' Monitor Services) to collect samples and data from the wells in the mine area coal aquifer (79-61)
and the mine area overburden aquifer (79-1 and 79-1) starting with the April 1996 sampling event.
All other field data and sample collection for the 1996 water year was conducted by James
' Mossman of Kerr Coal Company. Sample analyses were performed by ACZ Laboratories, Inc.
of Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
' This report discusses the ground water and surface water monitoring activities and atttttnarizes the
data collected during the 1996 water year in the following secuons:
• Section 3 -Mine Area Confined Ground Water
' • Section 4 -Mine Area Alluvial Ground Water
• Section 5 -Loadout Area Alluvial Gtound Water
• Section 6 -Mine Area Surface Water
' • Settton 7 -Loadout Area Surface Water
• Section 8 -Well Inspection
' • Section 9 -Future Monitoring
Field data and laboratory data are included in Exhibits A through I.
