•
Introduction
The information assembled !n this 1997 Annual Eydroloqy Report (A8R) includes data
collected from approved monitoring sites established at Sanaca Coal Company's (SCC) Sanaca
II Mina (State Permit No. C-80-005). Locations oL monitoring sites discussed in this
report can be found by referring to Ezhibit 7-2, eydrology Monitoring Site Location Hap,
which may ba found in the Saneu II Permit Application ParJcaga (PAP).
All references to 1997, or to `this yeas', rill be for Water Yaaz 1997 (October 1, 1996
through September 30, 1997) ualaea otherriae noted. All tables referred to in the
folloring tezt can be found in Appendiz A. In addition, a [able of contents for Appandiz
A is given at the beginning of that sppandix.
Between Oetobar 1996 end September 1997, mining progressed as indicated by the shaded
areas on Figure 1 (?r~~~+~ A) . Figure 1 displays the last two open pits remaining at
Sanaea II. In the southern permit area, the Wsdge coal Beam is being mined, and in the
nozthern permit azaa the Wolf Creak seam ie being mined.
Field conductivity and pe meters era calibrated prior to each day's use. The conductivity
meter ie calibrated using s potassium chloride solution with an electrical conductivity in
the 1000 to 3000 umhos/~ range. The p8 meter is calibrate6 using HBS traceable buffers
with pH values of 7 and 10.
Prior to Oetobar 1, 1989, all field conductivity velues collected at Seneca II ewnitorinq
sites were not corrected for temperature (1.6., 25° C). Field conductivity data starting
on October 1, 1989 rare temperature corrected to 25° C. The formula for correcting non-
corrected conductivity date may ba found in the 1990 through 1992 ABRS.
SCC instituted in 1995 a new monitoring site numbering system for its new Pazadoz1f1 rater
quality database. This new system is detailed in Table A. For convenience asks, th1a
table has bean placed at the end of the Table o! Contents (sea previous page). In
addition, Table 3, 9'•^^°"y of Ground Water Monitoring Wells; Table 9, S••"~'•-ry of Surface
Water Monitoring Sites; and the Table of Contents of Appendices B through E haw all bean
revised to correlate the old site (and mp) name to the new (Pazadoz) computer acme. Tha
Her computes Hems will ba vend throughout the follorinq text (except for the following
• paragraph).
1
