• Vegetation varies from riparian and blue grams oanplexes in the valley
bottoms to pinyon-juniper, oak brush, and pine cover on the side slopes.
Vegetation cover ranges from IHH$ in the valley bottans to near H8 on the
steeper side slope rock outcrop areas.
1.2 Sampling Station Descriptions
A monthly sampling program has been conducted since February 1984 to
assess the affect of mining operations on surface and groundwater quality
and quantity. Tables 1 and 2 summarize the current water monitoring
program. 'Ibis program has undergone several revisions over the last three
years. Additional sampling emphasis was placed on sane of the stations
because of increased mine operations on the surface (as discussed in the
Annual Report of 1984). The following are descriptions of the sampling
locations utilized during the quarter. These stations correspond to those
shave in Figure 1.
• PRS-1 Located on the Middle Fork of the Purgatoire River above the
surface facilities of the New Elk Mine. This station was selected
to assess stream quality and flow above mirung activities.
PRS-2 Located on the Purgatoire River below the New Elk and above the
Golden Eagle surface facilities. This station was selected to
assess stream quality and flow relating to potential effects of
the New Elk Mine and establish baseline data above the Golden
Eagle Mine.
PRS-3 Located on the Purgatoire River below the Golden Eagle surface
facilities. This station was established to assess potential
effects of mining on stream quality and flow.
MDGE-1 Incated in Ciruela Canyon approximately one-third mile fran the
confluence with the Purgatoire River. This station was
established to monitor the quality and quantity of mine water
• discharge fran the Golden Eagle Mine.
