<br /> ReVegeta tion <br /> Seeding and Planting <br /> <br /> A total of 21.5 acres were permanently seeded in the south mine block of the Seneca II-W <br /> Mine in 1996. Seeded areas included 21.5 acres seeded with Seed Mix No. 1 - Upland Sites <br /> and Ephemeral Drainages and supplemented with additional torb and shrub seed, see Table <br /> 96.2. There were no permanent revege to Lion activities in the north mine block. S eneca <br /> reclamation personnel also completed a direct-seed shrub area (3.1 acres) on the 1996 <br /> topsoil replaced north of "A' pit. Seeded and shrub seed areas are shown on Drawing 2W 96-3. <br /> The direct-seed shrub area was planted with the shrub seed mix, see Table 96.2, at a rate <br /> of 26 LB/acre. Seeding was completed with a Laird rangeland type drill seeder. All <br /> permanent seeding was completed in late September and early October. <br />Shrub Seedling Planting <br />During September 1996, 6948 containerized native tree and shrub seedlings were planted in <br />prepared plots at Seneca II-W mine. A crew from Bitterroot Native Growers, Corvallis, MT <br />planted 9820 seedlings in shrub plot 2W96-1 (1.6 acresl. This plot is located west of the <br />native aspen grove and near the east center of "A" pit reclaimed area. Also, 2128 seedlings <br />were planted in the 2W98-1 plot to supplement the 1995 planting. All seedlings were 10' <br />containerized tublinge grown Erom seed collected near Seneca Mine and treated with <br />mycorrhizal inoculant prepared Erom Seneca soils. See Table 96.3, Shcub and Tree Seedlings <br />Planted in 1996 for species and numbers. Also, see Drawing 2W96-3 Eor the location of <br />seeded areas and shrub plots. <br />Monitoring <br />Revegetation monitoring of permanently revege to ted areas was conducted during the summer of <br />1996 by ESCO Associates, Inc. The 1996 annual xevegetation monitoring report is submitted <br />as a separate document (ESCO and PWCC, 1997). <br />Weed Control <br />Survey of noxious weeds was carried out on the mine permit area during the 1996 field <br />season. Weed control activities were conducted only along the mine entrance road, near <br />Pond 006, Pond 005 and near Pond 009. Canada thistle (C irsium arvensel was the target <br />species in control areas. The applied herbicide consisted of a tank mix of 2.5 gallons of <br />. 22K Tordon and 2.5 gallons of 2,4,-D with 250 gallons of water. A spot spray gun was used <br />to concentrate control activities on target areas.
