• browse repellent was placed on all planted seedlings. All seedlings were treated with a
mycorrhizal fungi inoculum that was developed at the BNG nursery. The source of the
mycorrhizal inoculum was Erom soil collected in native mountain brush stands a[ the Seneca
TI Mine. Plantings were completed in late September 1996 in reclaimed sites which were
dieted several times during the growing season to control established herbaceous vegetation
and prepare the site far planting. The heavy discing created numerous planting microsites.
In addition, the site 961 received pre-emergent herbicide treatment of 4 oz. OUST per acre
to control annual wee ds.
Survey for noxious weeds was carried out on the Seneca II Mine permit area in 1996.
Because the 1996 weed control activities included some small scattered spot control areas,
sites which were sprayed were too small to depict on a map. Monitoring was conducted in
1996 to determine the need or level of retreatment necessary for areas sprayed in 1995.
Canada thistle (C irs ium arvense) was the primary target species in all control areas, with
lesser activity directed cowards areas of whi to top (Cardaria draba). The applied herbicide
consisted of a tank mix of 2.5 gallons o£ 22K Tordon and 2.9 gallons of 2,4,~D with 250
• gallons of water. Control areas were sprayed in June. A spot spray gun was used to
concentrate control activities on target areas, reducing potential impacts to adjacent
desirable vegetation. The herbicide mix, based on recommendations Erom the Colorado State
Extension Service, was mixed and applied under the supervision of the Seneca Mine
Reclamation Supervisor who is a certified applicator. The weed control areas will continue
to be monitored in 1997 Eor effectiveness and necessary retreatment.
Aevege to Lion Monitoring
Re vegetation monitoring of permanently revegetated areas was conducted during the summer of
1996 by ESCO Aeeociatea, Inc. The 1996 annual revege to tion monitoring report is submitted
as a separate document (ESCO and PWCC, 19971.
Grazing
Long yearlings were run in the Wedge Pasture during 1996. On August 3, 100 head were
placed in the Pecoco Pasture. on August 5, 154 head were placed in the Wadge pasture. on
August 24, 50 head were moved from Pecoco to Wadge. On September 23, all cattle were moved
off the Wadge pasture. In addition, the Pre~law areas north of Pecoco Pasture and the old
• Wolf Creek spoil areas were grazed with a roving band of 500 ewes and 640 lambs. The sheep
grazed those areas Erom August 14, 1996 until November 8, 1996.
4
