Currently about 57.5 acres of the
Upland Mining area has been placed in either final reclamation or is being topsoiled. In the South Lowland
Mining Area about 29.25 acres has been placed in reclamation.
Annual Report Maps: There are three annual report maps included in this report. Map 1 provides the
information for the South Lowland area which is basically a stream bed operation. The southern portion of
the site is where most of the activity occurred. The area reported in last year's annual report as being mined
has now been placed in reclamation status.
Map 2 shows the entire affected land area in the Upland Mining Area, but the main part of the
operation should be examined only with reference to Map 3 which shows the area of affected land in enlarged
detail. As Map 3 shows, approximately 46% of the affected land in the Upland Mining Area was placed in a
reclamation status category. This is similar to the percentage last year although the amount of affected land
has increased.
Affected Lands: In the South Lowland Mining area most of the disturbance was in the southern portions of
that part of the permit. The area where mining was occurring last year is now in a reclamation status. It is
possible that all mining will be completed in the South Lowland Mining area during the next year.
In the Upland Mining area the disturbance continued to expand to the south as well as to the west
toward Coal Creek. Most of the early disturbances in this area have been placed in revegetation. Topsoiling is
occurring in one area near the main road and that will be placed into revegetation in the near future. At this
point, it appears the expansion of the mining and progress of the reclamation have achieved a reasonably
stable relationship, that is, for each acre of new disturbance more or less an acre of older disturbance is
reclaimed.
Future mining in the Upland Mining area will probably continue in or near the existing disturbances.
Revegetation: Revegetation is showing good progress and good success. A thorough analysis of the
vegetation will. be conducted in the next year to establish a record of the development trends and patterns.
Mapping and Acreage Determinations: A new system has been established to map the area and determine
locations, often a difficult process on prairie lands. The maps have been converted to AutoCad format and
have been gridded for GPS. Using a handheld GPS unit locations on the land can be determined within about
20 to 30 feet accuracy. The next step in this process is to link the GPS data directly to the map so locations
are automatically input to the map.
Permit Boundary Problems: It has been determined by the Board of Land Commissioners that there is an
overlap between this permit and the adjacent Owens Brothers permit on the north end of the Upland Mining
Area. The annual report map shows the potential area of overlap. In April 2001, this will be much more
Centennial Materials 2001 Annual Report M-1988-044 Coal Creek Resources Page 1 of 1
