• Mining SummarX
During the year mining was done only at the Roadside North Portal (RSN) due to the higher quality
of coal and the current market demand. The Roadside South Portals (RSS) was being pumped and
ventilated. When the RSS mining was discontinued the FCT continuous haulage unit was removed
from the mine and is no longer being used.
In the RSN, mining was done in the 4th West and 5th West panels. Development of the 5th West
panel continued into February 1997 and was withdrawn without secondary mining. Mining was
done using a continuous miner and shuttle cazs. In the 5th West panel the pillar spacing was
70x120'. The extraction ratio for the panel was 39%. The 4th West panel was developed from
February through July and retreated from July through October. The panel was develop with
60x120' pillar spacing fora 43% extraction. On retreat from 4th West 2-3 rooms were driven towazd
the 5th West panel and room pillazs and two rows of the chain pillars were slabbed or split. The
overall recovery within the panel was 68% and 57% including the bamer between 4th and 5th West
panel. Development mining in 3rd West panel began in October and continued through the end of
the yeaz. Pillar spacing for this panel was 60x80' resulting in an extraction ration of 48%.
Projected Mining_
During 1998 mining is projected to continue orily in the RSN. The 3rd West panel will be
• completed with secondary mining on the way out of the panel. The 2nd West panel will be
developed and either panels will be mined perpendiculaz to the panel past the 1st West panel or the
2nd West panel will be retreat mined. Secondary mining is projected to have an extraction ratio of
60 - 70%.
Surface Inspection
An inspection routes was walked in the spring of 1997 and one route was walked in the fall over
areas projected to be mined or already mined areas in the RSN. One inspection routes were walked
over the RSS in the spring. Photographs were taken of the azea and the routes taken were marked
on a map. These routes and picture locations aze shown on the enclosed 1997 Subsidence Surveys
map. Had subsidence features been found or suspected, measurements would have been taken of
the features. The spring survey at the RSN was done by Robbie Wilson, a geologist out of the
Peabody Wes[em Flagstaffoffice, the spring RSS survey was done by Matt Trotter, a summer intern
from Colorado School of Mines, and the fall RSN survey was done by Larry Reschke.
The first RSN loop ,inspected on April 17, 1997, was over azeas being mined and projected to be
mined. The route started along the road in Main Canyon over the projected 2nd West panel where
picture 1 was taken looking north at the high relief of the canyon wall above 5th and 4th West
panels. Pictures 2 thru 5 were panoramic shots taken near the shear vertical cliffs above the
•
Page 2
