surface water. <br />A YSI (Yellow Springs Instrument) Model #33 was used to measure <br />' water quality, temperature, salinity, and conductivity. The pH <br />levels were taken using a Cole Palmer Model #5941-00 pH meter. <br />All other parameters were found by collecting samples in <br />J precharged bottles and submitting them to ACZ Laboratories, Inc. <br />of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, for analyses. <br />RESULTS <br />The data collected from the surface water monitoring stations is <br />presented in Appendix 1. Graphs of major chemical parameters are <br />also included in that appendix. Quarterly inspection reports on <br />the thirteen sediment control ponds located in the permit area <br />are included as Appendix 2. NPDES forms previously filed with <br />the Colorado Department of Health can be found in Appendix 3. <br />Somerset Mining Company pumped 18,020,000 gallons of water from <br />the North Fork River at the Culinary Water Intake. Of that <br />quantity, the Sanborn Creek Mine used approximately 11,812,500 <br />gallons and the town of Somerset used approximately 6,207,500 <br />gallons. <br />There was no discharge from either the Elk Creek or the Hubbard <br />Creek facility areas, including the Sanborn Creek dewatering <br />I pond, during the 1991 reporting period. <br />It should be noted that surface water stations S-1, S-2, and C-1 <br />I recorded water flows only during the Spring, and the unnamed <br />J drainage U-1 recorded no flow during the year. <br />After evaluating field tests and water analysis reports, it is <br />evident that water quantity and quality fluctuated according to <br />the seasonal Spring runoff and precipitation. It is also evident <br />that mining operations at the Sanborn Creek Mine had no apparent <br />effects on the water in the North Fork River or the Sanborn <br />Creek. In addition, there were no discharges into the river or <br />streams as a result of construction activities within the permit <br />area. <br />GROUND WATER MONITORING <br />METHODS <br />J Water samples were collected at monitoring stations SC-1, SC-2, <br />SC-3, H-10, and B-6 as previously described in the introduction. <br />I Water quality samples were collected using a hand bailer. <br />Parameters of temperature, pH, conductivity, and salinity were <br />determined in the field, and water levels were recorded from the <br />top of the well casing and reported as elevations.
