• at Seneca II. Russian thistle, which was a site dominant in 2003, was not found in 2004. It is
likely that yellow sweet clover will not be a persistent problem, but Japanese brome and
cheatgrass aze of concern. Shrub density is low at Seneca II ('T'able 6) but the shrubs aze very
robust at this site, probably due to the fact that transplants were used. Shrub tubelings planted in
some of the plots continue to show high survival in 2004 (Table 7).
In summary, these preliminary results indicate that the second seeding at Trapper Mine
has begun to establish. Established weeds at the site may mask the presence of the seeded
species but the natives may eventually increase in abundance relative to the weedy exotics.
Initial seeding at Colowyo resulted in establishment of most of the seeded species and weedy
annual forbs that dominated plots during this first growing season continue to be decline. The
recent appeazance of weedy annual grasses should be of concern but the established seeded
species are likely to emerge as succession proceeds. Seeding and shrub transplanting at Seneca
II mine appeazs to have been somewhat successful but the current dominance of the site by
weedy species may stress the shrubs in the future.

u
