Shrub establishment demonstration plots at Seneca II mine.
Results from the vegetation sampling indicate that with an easing of drought in 2004,
several of the seeded species at Trapper Mine have begun to establish (Table 1). Most of the
vegetative cover in demonstration plots at Trapper was attributed to weedy invasive species
(Table 1) such as Russian thistle, tall tumble mustazd and Japanese brome. Plant cover was
higher in the deeper-topsoiled treatments and was generally similaz between fenced and unfenced
treatments. Some shrubs were found in the shrub density and height surveys (Table 2) indicating
that at least a few shrubs have begun to establish during this more favorable period.
Results from Colowyo mine indicate that the autumn 2000 seeding operation was
successful as most of the seeded species continue to be found on the site in 2004 (Table 3).
Lewis flax, big sagebrush and common yarrow aze seeded species, which have established in all
plots. The seeded grass species are also well established. The weedy invasive species Russian
thistle, which was dominant in previous years, has been reduced to a minor component in 2004.
The appeazance of weedy invasive cheatgrass and Japanese brome at Colowyo in 2004 is of
concern for azresting development of the native component. Shrub species continue to establish
well in the plots at Colowyo (Table 4). Mountain big sagebrush appeazs to have established well
in most plots relative to other shrub species.
The fall 2000 seeding at the Seneca II mine appeazs to have been somewhat successful.
Many of the seeded species were encountered in some of the plots at Seneca II in 2004 (Table 5).
• Invasive weeds such as yellow sweet clover and Japanese brome continue to dominate most plots
