before it seriously interferes with the mining operation.
RULE 2.41(2): No areas have been fully reclaimed in the last year,
but prrogress is being made to finish several areas that are no longer
useful for mining and are not in a position where mining and reclamation
would conflict.
RULE 2.41(3): Reclamation work has progressed. Ihsing the last
year, the reclamation priority involved the visual berm. The bean had
achieved its maximum height, but the slope was too steep. Therefore, a
dozer was used to grade the slope into benches and terraces with a rough
surface. Although the first quarter of 1982 was unusually and intensely
dry, the berm was seeded anyway because the surface was loose and fresh.
It was hoped that rains in April and May would induce growth. April was
quite dry, but May storms may well permit an excellent growth in the
freshly graded waste material.
In the 1981 annual report it was stated that the benches on the
south side of the quarry would be planted in 1982. Because the berm was
of such great priority, required so much work and because the first
quarter of 1982 was sfl dry, no planting was done. It is anticipated
that during 1983, these benches and others can be fully prepared and
seeded.
RULE 2.41(4): The seed mixture used on the berm was based on a
series of simple experiments performed on a light table. Several different
species were separately seeded into trays filled with waste material.
Sane trays were fertilized, while others were not. In the tests, it was
found that waste material grew wheatgrasses, little bluestem, and the
grams grasses well with or without fertilizers. It was apparently too
