DOWFROTH -MILL BUILDING
Dowfroth is used in the milling process as a frothing agent. This material is
shipped to the mill in 350 gallon totes which are stored and used in the mill
building (Figure 2). Because it is stored in the mill building, any leak=~ would
be contained in the mill building and tailing ponds.
HYDROCHLORIC ACID (HCI) -GENERAL
Hydrochloric acid can be neutralized with chemically basic substances such
as soda ash or caustic soda. The pH will be slowly neutralized by the natural
alkalinity of the soil or water. Land spills should be contained by pitting or
diking and then neutralized with soda ash or caustic soda.
HYDROCHLORIC ACID (HCI) -YARD NORTH of MILL BUILDING
Hydrochloric acid (35-40°10) is delivered to the mill by a tanker truck and
transferred to one of two 50,000 gallon storage tanks. In 19911 the
containment structure for the HCI tanks was completely rebuilt. Tanks are
located north of the mill building, inside a fenced and lined containment
berm, with a layer of limestone bedding material to absorb and neutralize
spills. A collection sump captures any free liquid that might be spilled. The
. containment volume within the berm is greater than 100,000 gallons.
HCI is pumped on an intermittent basis from outdoor storage tanks to the mill
building where it is used in the lead-leach circuit. After use, HCI is discheirged
from the lead-leach circuit and neutralized with caustic soda in the mill
process thickener.
FLAMMABLE MATERIALS -GENERAL
Small containers (cumulatively less than 200 gallons) of flammable materials,
which may include petroleum products, are stored in a Flammable Materi.3ls /
Hazardous Waste Storage Building (Figure 2!• The containers are stored on
pallets designed with adequate secondary containment.
PETROLEUM PRODUCTS -GENERAL
Spills on land should be contained by pitting the ground or diking the ground
around the body. Absorbent pads andlor pumps can then be employed to
clean up the material.
Spills on water should be contained by absorbent booms, straw bate darns,
or diking with clean soil. Mechanical skimmers, separators, or absorb~snt
materials can then be used to extract the petroleum product.
Page 5
