See Figure 6-1 for illustration of historical precipitation data by month. April typically has the
• highest and December the lowest precipitation.
For stream flow analysis, the water year (October-September) is the reporting unit.
Therefore, water year precipitation for 1991 was 9.74", .13.08" for 1992, 12.16" for 1993,
10.54" for 1994, 16.7" for 1995, 12.82" for 1996, 20.21" for 1997, 15.35" for 1998, 13.41"
for 1999, 11.45" for 2000, 9.02" for 2001, 9.58" for 2002, and 8.99" for 2003. In conclusion,
below average precipitation for the water year resulted in less than average vegetative growth
and stream flows for irrigation in 2003.
6.1.4 Stream Gauping Stations
• As required by the ROD, (project Record of Decision from EIS), NSI contracted for surface
water monitoring of water quality and quantity. Monitoring was performed upstream and
downstream of the mining operation on Yellow and Piceance Creek by the USGS on four
existing stations with extensive historical data. Funding for the USGS stations was shared
with one of the other nahcolite projects (American Soda) in the area.
Data for the 2002 water year (October 2001 -September 2002) was published the following
year in 2003 by the USGS. The USGS water data can be down loaded from the USGS web site
at http://co.water.usgs.gov. The USGS report (pages 356-367) contains data pertaining to the
NSI project. Table 6-1 is a summary of key 2002 data for the NSI site. Historical data indicates
all stations (except Piceance Creek at Ryan Gulch, which remained the same)

31
