The surface layer is an approximately 5 inch thick grayish brown sandy loam. The subsoil is approxi-
mately 25 inches thick consisting of brown sandy loam and light olive brown and brown sandy clay
loam. The underlying soils at a depth of 60+ inches is a yellowish brown sandy loam. Soils at the
• proposed facility sight include a deeper layer of the light olive brown and brown sandy clay loam used
for clay production by the Robinson Brick and Tile Company. Gravelly sandy loam as well as shale
and sandstone outcrops are also encountered in these soil types.
Runoff in the Bresser series of soils rate from moderate to high; within the project zone runoff is rated
moderate with moderate water permeability. Plant rooting depth reaches nearly 60 inches
Most areas in these soil types are used for grazing beef cattle. Small scale cultivation of dry land crops
continues only moderately in the area. Where irrigation is available, alfalfa and silage corn are grown.
Urban development is included as a land use in these soils. [n addition, wildlife habitat is prime in
some locations. However, development throughout the Douglas County area has created pressure on
wildlife.
~lim~tg
The proposed project zone is in asemi-arid region ,with an average precipitation of less than 20 inches
per year. Precipitation occurs throughout the year, however rains are more sparse in June, July and
early August.
The climate of the proposed project area is considered moderate with high and low temperatures reach-
ing extremes. Temperatures range in averages from 26F in January to 70 F in July. Highs and lows
exceed that range as much as 30+/-degrees. The average annual air temperature is 45F to SOF. May to
• September are typically frost free yielding 120 to 135 frost free days.
This climatic information is based on National Weather Service and National Climatic Data Center
information from 1925-1991 and the USDA Soil Survey of the Castle Rock Area Colorado.

NORMALTEMPERATUREAVERAGE
#of years Jan Feb.
