DISPOSAL ACTIVITIES
• Ash Disposal
During the year 2001, a total of 43,076 tons of mixed fly and bottom ash
were transported to and disposed of at the Keenesburg Mine site. With the
reclamation of A-Pit complete, the entire 43,076 tons of ash was placed in
South B-Pit. This brings the total B-Pit ash volume to 274,343 tons (5,667
tons in North B-Pit and 268,676 tons in South B-Pit). The total amount of
ash disposed of at the Keenesburg site through the end of 2001 is 518,691
tons.
The only ash presently accepted for disposal at the Keenesburg facility is
the byproduct of the coal combustion process at the power plant located on
Coors Brewing Company property in Golden, Colorado. Since September,
1995 this power plant has been owned and operated by Trigen-Colorado
Energy Corporation (Trigen). According to the agreements between Trigen
and CEC, this ash will continue to be transported to the Keenesburg site
until reclamation activities are complete.
•
All of the steam and stoker coal used for fuel at the Trigen Power Plant
during the calendar year 2001, was mined and shipped from the $owie
Resources, Ltd., Bowie #2 Mine, located near Paonia, Colorado. Permit
documentation and initial coal/ash testing for this coal supply has been
completed, and is reconfirmed annually, thus qualifying the ash for disposal
at the Keenesburg site.
Annual ash "grab" samples were taken at the Trigen Power Plant at the end
~of 2001. Samples of both fly ash and bottom ash were collected and
submitted for testing. These samples were analyzed using the Toxicity
Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP), and for radioactivity. Copies of
the analysis reports are included in this section of the report.
Monthly ash disposal reports, detailing the disposal activities at the
Keenesburg Site, are found at the end of this section.
•
AHR-2001 -91-
