RECEIVED
AUG 2 61999
Division of Minerals 8 Geology
Summer Water Report
1999
Apea #2 Mine
Permit C-81-011
Surface Water
Although this summer has seen the highest precipitation since the mine was reclaimed, the
single sediment pond for the entve disturbed area did not discharge; it only contained
runoff water which was later evaporated. All disturbed area is channeled into the sediment
pond except for a small exemption area of less than 0.1 acre located at the reclaimed
office area. The sediment pond discharge is permitted with the Colorado Department of
Health as NPDES Permit #COG-850041. (The permit was formerly CO-0036668).
Quarterly DMR forms are attached for the last quarter 1999. Quarterly sediment pond
inspections revealed no problems with functionality of the pond.
Trout Creek, the perennial stream located adjacent to the reclaimed yard azea, was tested
quarterly for pH, Specific conductance, temperature and flow. The sample location was
moved to immediately downstream of the reclaimed area. The data for the summer
quarter 1999 showed greater than average flows in Trout Creek (for summer
measurement). The water is of good quality and compares favorably to the baseline
analysis included in the permit. Iron, zinc and arsenic are in low concentration. Total
dissolved solids are only 110 mg/L, which is much better than my tap water in Douglas
County.
All portal seals are intact and do not show any signs of seepage or other problems. The
mine or its reclamation has not had any adverse effect on the prevailing hydrologic
balance. The diversion ditch above the minesite along the residential access road required
cleaning as did the culvert crossing of this diversion under the Trout Creek Road.
Ground Water
In 1997 a revision was submitted to install two new shallow groundwater monitoring
wells upstream and downstream of the mine reclaimed area. These wells were installed in
1997 and replaced the old upstream and downstream wells. This was done since the
downstream well and surface water monitoring points were near the P&M Edna mine and
were recording fluctuating data. The l~' water sampling of both wells in 1998
demonstrated normal water quality. The sampling done in the summer of 1999 (enclosed)
