Energy Fuels Coal, Inc. Southfield Mine - 2004 Annual Hydrology Report Apri15, 2005 <br />the 2004 water year are provided in Appendices A and B. <br />Historic stream flow measurements (1979 - 1998) for Newlin, Magpie and Second Alkali Creeks <br />are summazized in Table 9 Historic, Stream Flow Measurements, which has been placed into <br />Appendix A. Stream flow measurements since 1998 are provided within this text in Table 9. <br />Although the drought conditions were not as extreme during 2004 as the previous few years, only <br />limited flows were observed in each of the drainages monitored. There was adequate precipitation <br />received during the 2004 water year to generate ephemeral spring flows in Newlin Creek. Minimal <br />and un-measurable flows were observed in Magpie Creek. Second Alkali Creek recorded no flows <br />during the reporting period. The two remaining sedimentation ponds (Ponds 4 and 5) did not fill to <br />the point of discharge during 2004. <br />Surface water samples were collected only during June 2004. One sample was collected from each <br />stream monitoring station. Current and historic field and laboratory water quality data for the <br />surface water monitoring stations on Newlin, Magpie, and Second Alkali Creeks are summarized in <br />Tables 10, 11, 14, 15, and 16. <br />The 2004 water quality data was reviewed graphically and statistically. Generally the surface water <br />quality in 2004 is fairly consistent with historic monitoring results. The 2004 results were compared <br />to the historic average for that location. The most significant differences are listed below. Note that <br />occasional high values can bias the average making comparisons difficult without a high level of <br />statistical analysis. <br />2004 Monitoring <br />• Magpie Creek Up Stream -conductivity and selenium were notably above the average <br />value. Calcium, magnesium, aluminum, iron, manganese and zinc were notably less than the <br />average values; <br />• Magpie Creek Down Stream -nitrate/nitrite was notably above the average value. Copper <br />and zinc were notably less than the average values; <br />• Newlin Creek Up Stream -Iron was notably less than the average value; <br />• Newlin Creek Down Stream -The 2004 results were very comparable to the average values <br />at this site; <br />A comparison of the up stream and the down stream historic average water quality monitoring <br />results was made for each stream to determine potential impacts due to the mining activities. The <br />most significant differences between up stream and down stream monitoring stations are listed <br />below. Again, note that occasional high values can bias the average making comparisons difficult <br />without a high level of statistical analysis. <br />Comparison Down Stream to Up Stream <br />• Magpie Creek -Total suspended solids and chloride decrease down stream. Sulfate and <br />cadmium increase down stream notably greater than the up stream average; <br />• Newlin Creek -Arsenic and manganese decrease down stream.
