i'
' 5.3 Geologic/Paleontological Resources
The geologic strata of the proposed quarry operations are
Upper Cretaceous in age. A thin veneer of Holocene sediments is
also present, especially along stream beds. From youngest to
oldest, the Cretaceous strata are: Pierre Shale, Niobrara
' Formation, Codell Sandstone, Carlile Shale, Greenhorn Limestone,
Graneros Shale, South Platte Formation, Lytle Sandstone. Fossils
' are known from all of these formations, but most are well known
invertebrates. The rarest fossils are vertebrates. Recently, a
' few fish fossils have been found in the Niobrara Formation in the
quarry south of Highway 66. This suggests that fish and possibly
' other vertebrates may be found in the Dowe Flats area.
Kenneth Carpenter, Paleontologist, is presently engaged in
preliminary work on the paleontological resources of the project
' area. The scope-of-work includes a literature search and field
survey of the project area. Based upon the results of Mr.
' Carpenter's studies, further paleontological studies and guidelines
will be formulated.

1

1

1
60
