Soil P.e cove ry Documentation
• was documented b
dail
Soil recove observation by the gx ading foreman and pit
y
ry
y
supervisor. Thrs quality control informat ion is used to verify soil salvage estimates
predicted from the baseline soil survey, confirm soil map unit types, justify salvage
tnic Y.ness, and evaluate soil suitability. Seil selvage occuxxed i n advance of the "A" pit
during the 1999 field season as shown on dr awing 2W99-2A. A large portion of this soil uas
placed on graded spoil north of "A" pit (drawing 2W99 -2 B) and the rest was placed in
s[ockpi les J and R see Table 99.11. Observ ations within the mixed brush, sandstone-derived
sorts indicated very suitable loamy soil was salvaged down to Che fxa ctuxed sandstone
bedtoc k. The chic Y.ness of recovered soil ranged from 0.5 feet on a dget op5 to about 3.0
feet in Swale or drainage landscapes.
SCC will continue [o closely monitor sml handling operations during the 2000 field season.
Only sortable sources of soil within the disturbance area will he salvaged to ensure the
reclaimed areas are restored to the desired postmine land uses. SCC will obtain variances
pursuant ro Rule 4.06.2(2) and Pe [mit C-B2-057 whenever suitable soil cannot be salvagetl
exclusively from any map unit because of equipment limitations or operator safety concerns.
Soil Fit - Sorl Fertirity
Shallow pos[mi ne soil pits are e>:cavated pe uodically near representative revegetation
monitoring sites to evaluate plant roo[i ng charac [e a sci cs, determine soil fertility,
ensure spoil sui[nbilit y, and compare soil/spoil data with site-specific revegeta lion data.
The pits ere selected using an intensity of one pit per 25 acres of reclamation. Postmine
soil pits are placed within re clams iron blocks that have been soiled and seeded fo[ a
minimum of three years. Simila[ minirtmm time frames are used for monitoring postmine
vegetation. The pe rmanen[ vegetation has yene rally established sufficiently after three to
four years [o evaluate interactions between rooting depths and soil/spoil quality (Schafer
et al ., 1959).
Sail Pi[s were tluq on.
