Ms. Christine Johnston
Mountain Coal Company
Page 5
August 23, 1996
Please provide an explanation why these required data were not collected or
if they are available provide them in a revised report page.
15. On page 6 (first paragraph under Groundwater Monitoring) is states that well
GP-1 was sampled seven times rather than the minimum scheduled three
times per year. This conflicts with Table 4 and the data set contained in
Appendix H. If additional analytical data are available for well GP-1 please
provide these in a revised report page for Appendix H.
16. Table E-4 and Table E-5 in Appendix E are not discussed in text. These
tables provide groundwater monitoring data for previous water years. Why
is previous water year data provided for only two wells and not the entire
monitoring well network. As a suggestion, these tables can be omitted.
17. Please explain how samples collected from MB-1 discharge water can be used
to characterize the quality of mine inflow water. MB-1 is used to treat
surface water runoff, thus, there is substantial mixing of mine water discharge
with other surface waters. Mine water quality should be analyzed prior.to
discharge to a sedimentation pond. Please refer to the last paragraph on page
15 where the report states, "any discharge from ponds would normally be
dominated by water quality characteristics of disturbed area runoff'.
18. On page 8, the first paragraph under Water Balance states that there
appeared to be no groundwater inflow from the "B" or "F" seams that was
discharged from the mine. Yet the previous two paragraphs discuss inflows
from both the "F" and "B" seams and on the following page it states that
"During WY 1993, mine water was discharged into the MB-1". Please revise
page 8 to be consistent and correctly account for all mine inflows encountered
during WY 1993.
19. On page 9 under Mine Water Quality, the text incorrectly references Table
4 (this should be Table 5). Please submit a revised report page.
20. On page 10, footnote 1 is missing from Table 7. Tf TSS data are available
please add them to table 7 and submit a revised report page.
21. The estimated sustained mine inflows are missing from the report. On page
11, the report states that mine inflows are shown on Table 5. `Table 5 on
page 8 shows water quality. Please correct the table and text and submit
revised report pages.
