Smooth brome (Bromopsis inermis) and orchardgrass were also important.
Total vegetation cover averaged 44.1 percent. Standing dead, litter, bare soil, and rock
cover averaged 2.0, 35.6, 16.2, and 2.1 percent, respectively. Species density averaged
35.4 species per 100 sq. m.
Herbaceous Production (Table 5)
Alfalfa averaged 98.1 pounds of herbaceous production per acre. All other species averaged
1,004.6 pounds per acre. Total herbaceous production averaged 1,102.7 pounds per acre.
Shrub Density (Table 6)
Native shrub, the only woody life form observed in this unit, averaged 85.0 individuals per
acre. Big sagebrush accounted for more than half of these. Mountain snowberry was also
important. Chokecherry (Padus virginiana ssp. melanocaroa), Saskatoon serviceberry
(Amelanchier alnifolia), and bitterbrush (Purshia tridentata) were minor contributors.
• PECOCO Pasture (Photographs 9 through 12)
Cover (Table 7)
Introduced perennial cool season grass was the dominant life form in this unit with 28.7
percent of total vegetation cover. Intermediate wheatgrass accounted for most of this
average. Smooth brome and orchardgrass were also important. Native perennial cool
season grasses averaged 16.2 percent of total vegetation cover. Western wheatgrass
(Pascogyrum smithii) was this life form's major cover contributor. Thickspike
wheatgrass (Elymus Ianceolatus fm. dasystachy~) was also important. Introduced annual
grasses averaged 10.7 percent of total vegetation cover. Japanese brome accounted for most
of this average but cheatgrass was also important.
Introduced perennial forb averaged 25.9 percent of total vegetation cover. Alfalfa accounted
for most of this but cicer milkvetch was also important. Canada thistle was a minor
contributor.
