inlet to this impoundment.
Weed Control
Survey for noxious weeds was carried out on the Seneca II Mine permit area in 2002. Monitoring was conducted in
2001 to determine [he need or level of retrea[men[ necessary for areas sprayed in 2002. Canada thistle (Cirsium
arvense was [he primary target species in all control areas, with lesser activity directed towards areas of white[op
(Cardaria drabal. The applied herbicide consisted of a tank mix of 2.5 gallons of 22K Tordon and 2.5 gallons of
2,4,D with 250 gallons of water. Control areas were sprayed in May and June. A spot spray gun was used to
concentrate control activities on target areas, reducing potential impacts to adjacent desirable vegetation. The
herbicide mix, based on recommendations from the Colorado-State Extension Service, was mixed and applied by the
Seneca Mine Reclamation Manager who is a certified applicator. The weed control areas will continue [o be
monitored in 2003 for effectiveness and necessary retreatment.
Revegetation Monitoring
Revegeta[ion monitoring of permanently revegeta[ed areas was conducted during the summer of 2002 by ESCO
• Associates, Inc. The 2002 annual revegetation monitoring report is submitted as a separate document (ESCO and
SCC, 2002).
Grazin
Long yearlings grazed in the Pecoco Pasture during 2002. On May IS's, 150 head were placed in the Pecoco Pasture.
On July 10'", all cattle were moved off the Pecoco Pasture. This resulted in 240 animal unit months on the Pecoco
Pasture. Since Seneca was in the process of realigning the fence and working on drainage channels in Wadge
Pasture, no cattle grazed the Wadge pasture in 2002.
This grazing scheme resulted 240 AUMs of grazing in the 210 acre Pecoco Pasture, which produced 276 AUM of
forage based on 2001 field data collected by ESCO. The grazing scheme for the Pecoco pasture resulted in 171
AUMs used. The uliiization was 62%.
The 2002 grazing season was extremely dry and [he forage did not rebound From a lack of moisture. Seneca will
conduct annual production monitoring in both Wadge Pasture and Pecoco Pastures during 2003 field season. Since
• SCC must haul water to the cattle in the Wadge Pasture this pasture is not utilized as much as the Pecoco Pasture,
4
