The most significant change was a
relocation of the sediment ponds. These, as the plan states, are used to settle wash fines. In the
reclamation process this results in a gradual backfilling of previously mined areas.
No additional reclamation was done in this area, however, some areas were cleaned of
various equipment to make the site somewhat more tidy.
Map 2 -East of Academy Boulevard
The mining in Phase le South continued to expand eastward and slightly southward.
This was the primary mining area for the last year. The house located in Phase 2e was moved
to the agreed to off site location (in Fountain). Therefore, mining can now proceed southward
in Phase 2e as needed.
No extraction occurred in Phase Se (north of the Fountain Mutual Ditch).
The aquifer recharge system was established with a piped connection to the Fountain
Mutual Ditch. A meter was installed to monitor the amount of water going into the lake. Spot
water quality testing was also done, particularly to monitor nitrate levels. Unfortunately, as the
summer went on less and less water was made available for the recharge and at times none was
available. Nevertheless, it appears the system works well with good seepage into the sands.
The tree planting continued to show good success, although a few more seedlings have
died. The survival rate, however, is still far in excess of what was anticipated. This success
was in spite of the dry winter and spring. During the dry times of 1996 a water truck was used
to add additional water to the seedlings. The truck simply rolled along the edge of the planting
and sprayed water over the tree planting area. This, in conjunction with the polyacrylamides
used when the planting was done, undoubtedly aided in the survival during this difficult
growing season.
A small access road was completed to the gate on Bradley Road. This is shown on the
map as "Ltd. Access." This access is not used for haul [tucks and in fact is rarely used at all.
When it is used only lightweight vehicles use the gate.
Daniels Sand Pit #2 Annual Report January 7, 1997 Additional Sheets page 1 of 2
