.,.
brome (Ceratochloa carinata) and western wheatgrass (Pascopyrum smithi~), each occupying
• 5.2% of total vegetation cover. With 20.4 percent total vegetation cover, native perennial forbs,
were also a prevalent component of the vegetation in this area. The dominant introduced
perennial forbs were titer milkvetch (Astragalus titer) with 7/10`"s of the lifeform total and alfalfa
with over 2/10"'s of the total. Introduced perennial cool season grasses comprised 11.7 percent of
total vegetation cover, predominantly orchard grass (Dactylis glomerafa). Accounting for 10
percent total vegetation cover were several introduced annual and biennial forbs. The three most
dominant species were twolobe speedwell (Pocilla biloba), salsify (Tragopogon dubius ssp.
major), and prickly lettuce (Lactuca serriola) with 3%, 2% and 1.74% respectively of total
vegetation cover. Four additional lifeforms, contributing less than 10% each to total vegetation
cover, comprised the balance: native annual and biennial forbs, introduced annual grasses,
native perennial forbs, and native shrubs.
Total vegetation cover in 1996 reclamation was 40.1 percent. The non-living balance was
composed of 33.3 percent litter, 23.9 percent bare soil, 2.2 percent rock, and 0.5 percent standing
dead. Total species density was 33 species per 100 sq.m.
HERBACEOUS PRODUCTION (TABLE 2)
Total herbaceous production for species other than alfalfa averaged 2110.9 pounds per acre.
• Production by alfalfa averaged 424.7 pounds per acre for a total herbaceous production value of
2535.6 pounds per acre.
WOODY PLANT DENSITY (TABLE 3)
Native shrubs averaged 732.5 individuals per acre. Snowberry (Symphoricarpos rotundifolius)
contributed nearly 4/10'"s of this lifeform's total, while Saskatoon serviceberry (Amelanchier
alnifolia) contributed another 3/10""to the total. Big sagebrush (Seriphidium tridentatum), Wood's
rose (Rosa woodsii), Gambel's oak (Quercus gambelir), chokecherry (Padus virginiana ssp.
melanocarpa), bitterbrush (Purshia tridentata), and Arkansas rose (Rosa arkansana) all
contributed less than one-tenth to the total, comprising fhe balance.
1999 Reclaimed Area
(Photographs 5-8}
COVER (TABLE 4)
Native perennial grasses were the dominant lifeform in this area, comprising 36.5 percent total
vegetation cover, shared primarily by five species. Western wheatgrass composed the bulk of
. the total with 11.5% total vegetation cover, next was slender wheatgrass (Elymus trachycaulus)
