' 6. The Anima • ver is located about 700• et south of
' the site. Ponds are in place to intercept drainage
from the landfill No. 2 site before it reaches the
Animas River.
' In June, 1975 the San Juan Regional Planning Commission ha.d a land
use inventory completed for that portion of San Juan Country that
includes Silverton and the immediate vicinity of Silverton. Land
use within this study area is depicted on a Base Map, and shows
ownership (public and private) of lands as well as present; use of
lands near Silverton. The landfill site discussed herein is shown
' on the Base Map, as well as adjacent lands. For additionzil
information, the reader is referred to the "Domestic Services
Improvement Plan and Land Use Inventory for the Town of S:~lverton".
Copies are available from the Town, County and Planning Commission.
' No major changes have occurred in land use in the area si~lce 1975,
with the exception of tailings ponds shown herein.
' Alternate Locations. Due to the topography of San Juan C~~unty and,
particu ar y, the area near Silverton, suitable landfill sites are
extremely hard to identify. The terrain dictates the use of existing
' valleys or available areas that are not located on steep slopes.
Lack of cover material negates attempts to utilize valleys and draws.
Flood plains and possible pollution of surface streams inhibits
utilization of valley areas. Private property is generally not
available.
No alterate locations were identified. The Town and County are
' presently in such a position that utilization of inactive tailings
ponds provide a unique solution and virtually the only suitable
areas considering access, drainage, haul distance and cover material.
Service Area. The landfill will serve all inhabited areas of San
Juan County which include:
' Town of Silverton
Chattanooga
South Mineral Camp Ground (U.S.F.S.)
' Molas Lake
Howardsville
~ ' Other isolated dwellings or businesses located within the perimeter
defined above also contribute to the landfill. No count of these
dwellings is available, but we feel the annual volume co~ltribution
' can be considered insignificant.
As can be seen by the map on page 6, the landfill site is centrally
located with reference to the volume of wastes generated within the
' perimeter of the service area. In addition, the location is excellent
aesthetically because it is out of view of the general public.
Prevailing winds are to the northeast, therefore should any material
' happen to blow out of the site it will not be conveyed toward any
roadway or inhabited area.

i
-4-
