ROCKY ]?LATS SOII. PLUTONNM79*240 SURVEYS FROM 1970 TO 1991
Category 2 An area where the concentrations are borderline and close to the standard. This
area includes Sector 1.
(Sectors 1 and 2 are within the eastern portion of the two-mile radius of the plant.
The areas sampled are all outside the original Rocky Flats boundary. Areas
' within the original plant boundary therefore are excluded from these surveys. The
variability within the plant areas not sampled could vary from background to
concentrations well in excess of those for Sector 2. (Seed et al; Krey et al;
Lataor)
Category 3 Areas that have significant measured values of Rocky Flats Plutonium79210 but
are below the standard. These include Sectors 4, 6, 7, and generally within the
eastern portion of the four-mile radius,
Category 4 Areas that have very low Rocky Flats plutonium79240. These include Sectors 5
and 8 through 13, which generally represent the four mile radius and beyond.
Map 1 shows the spatial differences among the areas, supported by the data. The results also
support tF:e decision to examine Sectors 1 and 2 in more detail. The results of Sectors 1 and 2
' support the decision to subdivide these sectors into sub-areas for more intense sampling in 1989
and 1991 to provide a higher level of resolution.
` Map 2 uses the median of the 1975-1991 data to display the results. Visually there are no
discernable differences with the spatial relationship than with the full data set.
Therefore, the data strongly support a correlation of soil plutonium79240 with distance east from
the plant. In addition, there is a strong indication or footprint to the source, the 903 pad. The
903 pad i:t the barrel storage area cleaned up in the late 1960's. The barrels leaked plutonium-
, contaminated oils and solvents. The cleanup resulted in the dispersal of oils and plutonium
associated with the oils, by wind into the surrounding environment.

CJ
'
17

LJ
