1
ROCKY ]?I,ATS SOIL PLUTONILTM79290 SURVEYS FROM 1970 TO 1991
r In order to visualize this data further, GIS Map 1 was produced displaying the median of the
entire record form 1970 to 1991. Map 1 uses four shades to display median values of the 1970
to 1991 record for each sector:
0.000 to 0.1 pCl/gram,
' >0.1 to 0.5 pCi/gram
0.5 to 0.9 pCi/gram
>0.9 pCUgram
1 Colors are calibrated to each range. The color intensity corresponds to significant
increases in concentrations. The difference in the lowest to the highest concentrations is
roughly two magnitudes. The interval between the extremes is split into two equal
ranges. Each sector has been shaded according to the appropriate range to which it
belongs.
The ranges used to associate the values was selected roughly, but there is enough
distinction to illustrate the differences among medians for the sectors. The data for the
sectors lends itself fairly well to demonstrate the differences and similarities among the
sectors.
SE:ctor 2 is displayed prominently. Sector 2 is the only sector to stand out above the
standard.
SF:ctor 1 is the only sector to be within one multiple of the standard.
Sectors 4, 6 and 7 have elevated values, but are many multiples below the standard and
share a common shade.
Sectors 5, 8 through 13 are a magnitude below the standard and in general a magnitude
below the next closest range of sectors.
The graphs and map presentations produce similar results. Visually, they both provide a
compatible basis to consider segregating the area around Rocky Flats into four general
categories:
Category 1 An area of contamination in excess of the state plutonium standard of 0.9
pCUgram of soil. This area includes Sector 2.
'
16
gym .::........... .....:.:...:.. .

r
