Grasses currently dominate the site. Perennial grasses include Desert wheatgrass,
Intermediate wheatgrass, Western wheatgrass, Slender wheatgrass, Russian wildrye, and
Green needle-grass. Cheatgrass densities decreased substantially from 1999 but the perennial
grasses appear to be increasing in density.
Few shrubs and forbs were noted in the area. Forbs were limited to Cudweed sagewort and
Small bumet. The density of Small bumet continues to decrease since 1998. Shrubs observed
included Shadscale, Rubber rabbitbrush, and Big sagebrush. Their presence appeared sparse
but can be misleading at this early stage of stand establishment.
Several areas were sprayed with either Oust (3/19/00, 0.6 oz./acre) or Roundup Pro (3/29/00,
12 oz./acre) in the spring to control cheatgrass. Very light application rates were used to limit
adverse effects on the existing perennial vegetation. A seed mix of predominately forbs and
shrubs (see Permit Table V-13a, attached) was broadcast and the site lightly scarified with a
harrow on April 18.
Both herbicides performed well at eliminating the cheatgrass. Oust, however, also noticeably
stunted the existing perennial grasses. The Roundup Pro appeared to have little effect on the
perennial vegetation.
Few seedlings were observed during 2000 on either treatment. This may be due to poor
timing of precipitation following the seeding. Additional time is needed to evaluate the
success of the treatments.
Soil Stockpiles
RP-5 Stockpiles
The tops of these piles were disturbed during the combination of RP-2/3 and RP-4 in ] 998.
Interim seeding took place that Fall. Russian thistle dominated the site in 1999 limiting the
development of the seedlings. In 2000 this site was lightly sprayed with 2,4-D amine at a rate
of 12 oz/acre when the Russian thistle seedlings were about 1 to 2 inches in height. No
