the hy~~ulcher, but areas available will be mulched. Figure 5-2 illustrates status
~.
of di:•,w ued and reclaimed areas.
5.3.4 Reclamation Fencing
All topsoil embankments, former laydown areas and seeded monitoring wells at
IRI-1 and EX-2 site have been fenced to exclude livestock grazing.
5.3.5 Monitoring
Per NaTec monitoring plan, preliminary (first two years) reclamation results will be
visually inspected and sampled by herbaceous evaluation. Past experience of
reclamation in th! Piceance Basin indicates approximately three years for seeded
species to become established without supplemental watering. Therefore, first
year results are very preliminary.
Topsoil embankments were inspected early in September, 1991 at the end of the
growing season. Perennial species were immature and grass species not
identifiable. Plant vigor and condition of seeded species was good. Erosion was
minimal or absent. Production of 200-400 Ibs/acre was excellent for first year
growth. Some heavy grazing was indicated, but fences were installed and gates
closed to eliminate grazing by wild horses during growing season. Weed species
were minimal at water and injection well sites but more evident at topsoil site near
evaporation ponds. An inspection by Colorado Mined Land Reclamation staff
' member of July 2, 1991 concluded that seedings from fall of 1990 had
"germinated, and barring any drought conditions, should provide a good cover on
the stockpiles".
39
__ -.
