2.0 SITE IN'~~STIGATION <br />Envirocon personnel were en site ai the ~~"est Elk Itiine facilin• from <br />September 27 to October 1, 1994, to perform a slope stability investigation of <br />Sylvester C=ulch. .~ portion of Sylvester Gulch ~cas previously mapped and <br />reported in the Zi~est Elk Mine Slope Stahffity analysis ~.Envirocon, 1993). The <br />area pre~riously mapped is west of the c: eek, ber.yeen the creek and sandstone <br />outcrops near the 6,S00 feet elevation level, and extends south from the subsoil <br />stockpile to the fan portal. The area mapped during the 1994 investigation <br />extends along the east side of Sylvester Gulch, from Highway 133 to the fan <br />portal; south of the fan portal, the area broadens to include both sides of the <br />gulch and adjacent drainage basins. -Iapping efforts typically included the <br />sides of the drainage basins to the sandstone outcrops. <br />A detailed geomorphologic map of Sylvester Gulch, Figure 1.0, showing <br />landslide areas and hydrologic features was developed during the site visit. <br />The locations of landslides, hummocky terrain, springs, and surface runoff are <br />mapped. No sur.~eying was used during this mapping effort; features were <br />located by compass, and using power poles and topographic features as <br />references. Mapping was performedwith an aerial photo-enhanced topography <br />map (IntraSearch, 1994). <br />• 2 <br />
