Alternatives
Any other water usage alternatives such ae attempting to store and release
enough water at the mine site to ensure an amount of water equal to the
7 mine's consumptive use would reach Hardacrabble Creek would be wasteful
J and impractical. First, there ie virtually no reasonable source of water
available near the mine site for reservoir storage. so exchange with
J downstream water rights ie difficult. if not impossible.
J Finally, even if water was available for storage at the mine site, the
release of stored water to Newlin Creek in the small volumes necessary to
offset mine usage would be wasteful and impractical because it would
rarely. if ever. reach the confluence with Hardacrabble Creek.
DESCPIPYIOP dF PHYSICAL SSY7IPG
The Southfield Mine permit and lease boundaries are shown on Figure 2.
The property is located northeast of the Wet Mountain fault. straddling
the axis of the Chandler syncline. Important geologic features are shown
on Figure 3. The syncline generally plunges northwesterly in this area;
its southwestern limb is steeply inclined near the Wet Mountain fault. but
its northeastern limb ie much less inclined. Since the land surface
elopes to the northeast. the subcrops or outcrops of the geologic units
comprising the syncline are higher in elevation on the southwestern rim
than on the northeastern rim. Geologic unite important to the
hydrogeology of the area are the Pierre Shale, Trinidad Sandstone, and
Vermejo and Raton Formations.
The mine lease property mostly lies in the Newlin Creek drainage, a
tributary of Hardacrabble Creek. which in turn ie tributary to the
Arkansas River. Magpie Creek and several other small drainages on the
mine lease property are tributary to Newlin Creek. Plate 1 shows the
locations, amounts and appropriation dates for water rights on Newlin
Creek and Hardecrabble Creek. Newlin Creek originates in the Wet
- 4 -
