T

The Operator conducted site cleanup and final reclamation work in the Great Helper
Pit area in 2002. The Great Hesper Pit Map, 1' = 100', shows the outline of the site following
final reclamation work. The Great Hesper Pit had been previously graded and revegetated. In
accordance with the recommendations of Division staff, trash and debris were collected and
disposed to clean up the general area, existing runoff/sediment catchment berms were re-
graded, and all affected areas were reseeded. A number of small diameter vent holes and
shafts were present above the west pit wall; while it is not clear whether or not these features
were associated with the Great Hesper Pit, the Operator backfilled and reclaimed all openings.
The numbering, as shown on the maps, of the backfilled and reclaimed shaft/vent sites is
arbitrary and is only to facilitate referencing. An identification sign has been posted, in
response to an Inspection Report Corrective Action item, at the southern end of the Great
Hesper Pit area (see November 6, 2002 letter from the Operator documenting installation of
identification sign).
Fill material for backfilling of open shafts and vents in this general area was obtained
from the area labeled as "Powder Mag" to the east of the Anna May Mine. This borrow area
was a mound of soil and near-surface fine material that had been graded by past operators to
provide a secure location for an explosives magazine. Although no topsoil was salvaged
anywhere in this general area during historical operations, this mound of fine, weathered
material will be a suitable substitute. The borrow site was graded, furrowed, and seeded
following completion of reclamation activities.
Within the Great Helper Pit, the Division inspector noted an area with minor rilling
and exposed rock with little vegetation. The Operator re-graded this area, re-established
runoff berms, cross-ripped the entire slope, and then reseeded the affected area. This area is
noted as "Erosion Control Area" on the Great Helper Pit map.
Following completion of al( reclamation work, equipment access routes were chiseled
to loosen compaction and then reseeded. All disturbed areas were reseeded by hand
broadcasting with the following seed mix (from the approved reclamation plan):
Crested Wheatgrass: 5 - 7 lbs/ac
Western Wheatgrass: 2 - 3 lbs/ac
Four Wing Saltbush: 3.3 - 4.41bs/ac
Indian Rice Grass: 3.3 - 4.4 lbs/ac
Sand Drop Seed: 0.3 ]bs/ac
Yellow Sweet Clover: 1 lb/ac
Total Seed: 15 - 201bs/ac
The final outline of the Great Helper Pit shown on the 1" = 100' scale map does not
represent an area that was disturbed during the 2002 reclamation work. Most of the Great
Helper Pit is already well vegetated and stable. No work was conducted in stable areas, and
care was taken to avoid disturbance to existing vegetation. The outline shown on the Great
Helper Pit map is an attempt to portray the maximum limits of the historical affected area of
the Great Helper Pit.
2
