• •
RULE 2.41(5): THE TYPE AND APPROXIMATE QUANTITY OF FERTILIZERS, ORGANIC
MATERIAL, OR SOIL CONDITIONERS USED AND LOCATION OF USE.
No fertilizers, organic material, or soil conditioners were used in
the seeding process. Based on the medium type and previous growth, it
was determined that the soil did not exhibit any evidence of nutrient
deficiency. Also, because this was simply an interseeding rather than
new seeding, no fertilization or other amendments were considered
necessary.
RULE 2.41(6): AN APPRAISAL OF THE SUCCESS OF RECLAMATION EFFORTS, AND IN
THE EVENT OF FAILURE OF ANY EFFORTS, A SHORT NARRATIVE ON THE SUSPECTED
OR DETERMINED CAUSE OF SUCH FAILURE.
The 3 acre area which was seeded, at the time of the inspection in
December 1986 which was several months after seeding, showed clear
evidence of additional grass cover. In the moist low areas Blue Grama
was developing very strongly. In many other locations first year
wheatgrass plants were in moderate abundance. Taking into account the
rate of seeding, the density and composition of the previous vegetation
cover, and the unusually dry conditions for many weeks after seeding, it
appears the seeding was quite successful and should show some increased
cover and density in the next two years. It is doubtful however the
vegetation will achieve a density more than about 207, greater than it
currently exhibits. It appears the current density in most areas is
near the holding capacity. However, the cover should increase more than
the density as competition selects the stronger individuals and those
individuals achieve mature sizes.
The ditch slope seeding was quite successful, although the density
was not great. Weed growth was high as a result of the use of topsoil,
a very common problem in this area. However, the weed growth did not
appear to affect the growth of the grasses. The grasses never showed
any particularly great moisture stress.
RULE 2.41(7): ESTIMATES OF THE LOCATION AND NUMBER OF ACRES TO BE
AFFECTED IN THE COMING YEAR.
During the next year, it is clear that extraction will continue in
Phase Ie. This is necessary in order to complete the north end of the
phase and achieve a final grade consistent with the plans. However,
because the ditch is still in place this area cannot be expanded and
therefore, in Phase Ie, unless work begins on the south end, no
additional acreage will be opened.
In Phase IIe, plans for the next year are somewhat less definite.
It is possible that each of the four areas already exposed will be
worked to varying degrees depending upon the product needs and demand.
For purposes of this report, it is estimated that each of these four
areas will be expanded a total of about 3 to 6 acres.
FILE 73-7 ANNUAL REPORT - 1986/1987 PAGE 5 OF 6
