• 1995 Annual Hydrologic Report
Page 7
inflows and discharges may indicate a more accurate balance of flows between location
1 and location 8. The variation in the monthly average discharges is primarily due to the
fluctuation in the dewatering schedule at location 8.
Consumptive Use
A monthly listing of domestic water usage is shown on data page CA-3. Meter 1 supplies
the buildings near the Roadside South entrance gate. Meter 2 supplies the preparation
plant and the Roadside South office and bathhouse. The fact that the usage was the
same each month on this meter and has been for a couple of years was attributed to the
Town of Palisade using an estimated number because the meter is out of order.
Domestic water used in the plant is a calculated number. Meter 3 supplies the Roadside
North facilities but has not been hooked up since operations resumed.
Mine water is used underground for dust suppression in the mining process and on
roadways. Water usage underground is not measured but is being estimated. The mine
• water is also used for process water in the preparation plant. The water circuit in the
plant is closed but leaves the plant as added moisture in the coal and refuse. Mine water
usage for the Year is given on data page C-3. Water added to the coal during the mining
and processing can be roughly calculated from coal moisture levels measured at different
stages in the process. The following information was used to make calculations for this
year:
-Estimated equilibrium moisture of 4.5%
-Measured raw coal tons of 309,683 for the Roadside South Portals and 405,241
for the Roadside North with estimated moisture of 8 and 7% respectively.
-Measured clean coal tons of 500,762 with an estimated moisture of 9.6%
-Estimated refixse tons of 237,288 with an estimated moisture of 18%
The moisture added during mining calculates out to be 5.05 million gallons and the
moisture added during cleaning calculates out to be 8.70 million gallons. The metered
mine water into the plant was 3.85 million gallons resulting in 4.85 million gallons of
domestic water being used in the plant.
Water was used for as the primary means of dust control on the surface and underground
roads during the year. Magnesium chloride and calcium chloritde were used on roads,
• both surface and underground, to reduce the manpower requirements for keeping the
roads damp. Between the two mines approximately 7200 gallons of water per day, 3
