Second mining in the Second East Section was resumed in Septem-
ber. The entries in the Third East Section were driven to attempt to pick
up the water in the old Twin Pines wor}sings and establish a new sump. Due
to bad roof conditions the entries were stopped and the Section secured.
It appears that entries ended just short of the a:tis of the sycline.
Probe holes drilled into the Abandoned Twin Pines Workings showed a water
level of about 2 feet in the workings at this point. The coal seam at
this point appears to be dipping sharply to the East. Mining to the
Northeast of the sump, in the Second East Section, appeared to cross the
syncline axis near the old workings. No appreciable water was encountered
in this development. It does not appear that the Main Entries have crossed
the axis cf the syncline. The estimated pool of water remaining in the
abandoned Twin Pines mine and adjacent Cedar Canon wor}sings is shown on
the enlarged Section Map, enclosed. With second mining continuing n the
Second East Section pumping has now been discontinued in the sump. fi'~_
portion of the pillars were left to prevent a breach of the barrier
between the Second East and the old workings. When the main entries cross
the axis of the syncl:;_ne a permanent sump will be established in the axis
of the syncline.
Concerning the clairification requested in a letter from the Division,
dated October 5, 1988, the statement "The reservoir level in the abandoned
mines increased to the level of the probe into the Cedar Canon Mine which
had previously quit running" was not a mistake. The probe hole refered to
was the hole directly above the indicated sump location in the pair of
entries projecting from Cedar Canon Mine. These entries were not clearly
shown as Cedar Canon workings, Flow from this hole did stop after pumping
was resumed. The location has been circled on the enlarged Section Map.
Discharge from the mine is being monitored in accordance with the require-
ments of Stipulation Nos. 1 an 2 and the NPEDS permit. Copies of discharge
logs, sample logs, NPEDS reports, and Idine Maps are enclosed.
