• 6.3.4 Waste Disposal
Common domestic solid waste is collected in containers and periodically transported to an
approved landfill. Sewage from the plant is directed to a septic system with drain field. Sewage
from temporary port-a-potties is collected and hauled to an off site disposal system. In 2000,
two barrels of lab reagent waste and two barrels of waste oil were shipped to an approved off
site facility for treatment and disposal. Lab waste was considered hazardous waste because of
chromium and silver content greater than EPA limits. Three five gallon containers of old
chemicals were also shipped to an approved off site facility. Process wastewater including
boiler blowdown, plant washdown, and contaminated precipitation runoff was directed to the
process pond. A pump in the process pond allows WRN to recycle the water to the barren
system. As a result of excess process water in November 2000, 47,040 gallons of process
• water containing 25.5 tons of sodium bicarbonate was shipped to an approved off site disposal
facility. Royalties were paid on the 25.5 tons of product. The wastewater pond stores water
from cooling tower blowdown, water softener brine, and blowdown from the water heaters.
6.3.5 Water DischargelErosion Control
The WRN nahcolite solution mine has been designed as a zero discharge facility in regard to
wastewater. Containment structures are designed and constructed to contain the runoff
expected from a 25-year precipitation event. Disturbed areas associated with access roads, the
well field and plant site are reclaimed as soon as practical following disturbance. Semi annual
WRN inspections/clean-up were preformed and annual report submitted to CDPHE WQCD.
. 91
